My Big Decision

Journal Entry: Thu Jul 9, 2009, 1:01 PM
If anyone asked me about a month ago I would have absolutely answered "NO" to the question I was asked today. I was approached today about someone buying one of my cameras. I have three actually but only two here with me in Iraq. My recent purchase of a Canon 5D Mark II was probably one of the better decisions I've made in my life. The image quality this camera delivers has just blown me away and add the fact it takes 1080p HD video on top of that and it's a workhorse that can't be beat by any in it's price point. After the purchase of the 5D I have started to use my Rebel XSi significantly less than I had anticipated. And the 5D has forced me to look at my photography in whole new light so to speak. This is the camera I bought to replace a broken XSi that was out for repairs at Best Buy. On a side note, the "Black Tie" Geek Squad insurance plan at Best Buy can't be beat by anyone I have researched. But as usual... I digress.

So why am I writing this journal? I hate having emotional attachments to inanimate objects! I took pictures of the kids over Christmas leave before I was sent to this shit hole of a country with it. And I have taken several shots that have been published with it. Almost my entire gallery here at DA has been taken with that camera. The more I think about it the more it eats at me. It's the camera that made me decide to become a photographer full time. But I know in the end it's a good decision to make to the positive. I'm not selling the memories I captured with it nor am I giving away my "eye" with the kit. Am I being irrational? Of course I am and I damn well know it. I'm going to answer "yes" to question put forth to me today. I'm selling it and going to spend to money on improving the 5D Mark II. Or perhaps I can just hold on to the money until I get home, go out in Philly and have a lot of fun. I'll probably use it to pay back some very good people that have helped me in the past.

Thanks very much for your kind words. I have no idea how much longer we're going to be here but I plan on making a much larger difference when I get home by going behind the lens with the military. It will put me in places where my images might make a difference.
